Overview
The University of California is one of the largest and most respected public university systems in the world. It began in 1868 and today consists of ten campuses across the state of California, each with its own admissions process, academic strengths, and campus culture. UC campuses are known for strong research output, Nobel Prize-winning faculty, and leading programs in engineering, computer science, life sciences, business, law, medicine, and the arts. Because each campus applies separately, students should research individual campuses rather than treating UC as a single university.
Student Life and Campus Facilities
UC campuses offer modern libraries, research laboratories, sports and recreation centers, student housing, and hundreds of clubs and student organizations. Locations range from big-city campuses like UCLA to coastal campuses like UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz and quieter college towns like UC Davis. International students can access orientation programs, academic advising, career services, and health and wellbeing support. Living costs in California are generally high, especially near the coast and in major cities, so planning a budget early is important.
