Which of the Three Routes Fits You
- Full PhD Grant: for postgraduates who want to complete an entire doctorate in Austria, and who have already completed their prior studies at a university outside Austria.
- Postdoc Grant: narrower by design — applicants must already be actively teaching and researching at an ASEA-UNINET member university in one of the five eligible countries.
- Music Practice Grant: open to undergraduate or graduate-level applicants working in instrumental or vocal performance, composition, or conducting.
All three routes require very good English and/or German, and PhD applicants specifically need English evidence at B2 or C1 level depending on their programme.

What “€1,600 a Month” Really Covers
The Full PhD route is the strongest financially: €1,300 in base scholarship plus a €300 mobility subsidy comes to €1,600 a month across a potential 36-month doctorate. But OeAD is explicit that this is supplementary funding, not a complete cost-of-living package.

How to Apply — PhD Route
- Identify an eligible Austrian ASEA-UNINET member university and a suitable doctoral supervisor before doing anything else.
- Write a 5–10 page research proposal covering the research problem, literature review, methodology, expected results, timetable and contribution to the field.
- Secure a formal Letter of Consent or Acceptance from your Austrian supervisor.
- Arrange two academic recommendation letters, with one specifically connected to an ASEA-UNINET member university in your home country.
- Prepare B2/C1 English evidence, your passport, and graduation certificates.
- Submit your scholarship application through the OeAD/grants.at system.
- Complete the university’s separate admission procedure where required.
