Purpose of the Program
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship was founded to bring together a global community of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others. Its fundamental goal is not just to reward academic excellence, but to nurture individuals who combine intellectual rigor with compassion, leadership, and a vision for positive change.
This is more than a grant. It’s a mission-driven scholarship — the Trust seeks scholars who don’t just consume knowledge, but who use it to make the world better.
Who Is Eligible?
Here’s what you need to know about whether you can apply:
- You must be a citizen of any country outside the UK.
- You need to be applying to a full-time postgraduate course at Cambridge:
- PhD (full-time or in some cases part-time)
- MLitt (full-time)
- One-year taught postgraduate course, with some exceptions.
- Some courses are explicitly not eligible for Gates Cambridge funding: for example, MBA, MFin, EMBA, MASt, PGCE, most part-time degrees (except PhD), and certain medical or clinical programs.
- Current Cambridge students can apply, but only for a new degree — not to continue funding for a degree they’ve already started.

Selection Criteria: What the Trust Looks For
Gates Cambridge doesn’t just reward academic brilliance. Their selection is based on four core criteria:
- Intellectual ability – excellence in academics and research potential.
- Reasons for choice of course – a clear and convincing explanation of why you want to study your chosen subject at Cambridge and how it fits into your future plans.
- Commitment to improving the lives of others – demonstrated through past experiences, community work, service, or other impact.
- Leadership capacity – evidence that you’ve led change, inspired people, or driven initiatives; plus, how you’ll use leadership to create future impact.

Application Process
Applying for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a two-part process — you’re applying both for admission to Cambridge and for the scholarship.
1. Use the Cambridge Graduate Application Portal
You’ll submit a combined application through Cambridge’s Graduate Application Portal: one part for admission (your course + college), and the other part for funding (including Gates Cambridge).
2. Scholarship-Specific Questions
In the funding section, you’ll have to answer four short essays, each tied to the core Gates Cambridge criteria:
- Describe your academic excellence through your education and experience (200 words).
- Explain why you chose your course at Cambridge and how it aligns with your future aspirations (200 words).
- Provide an example of your commitment to improving others’ lives, explaining why it matters to you (300 words).
- Reflect on your leadership capacity with a real example, and explain how this leadership will help you make an impact (300 words).
3. Research Proposal (for PhD Applicants)
If you’re applying for a PhD, you must submit a research proposal. Even if Cambridge doesn’t explicitly require one for your course application, the Gates Cambridge section does.
4. References
- You’ll need two academic references (for admission).
- In addition, one Gates Cambridge-specific reference is required. This referee should discuss how you meet the scholarship’s criteria: intellectual strength, leadership, social commitment, and course fit.
- The referee should be someone who truly knows you in the relevant contexts — an academic advisor, employer, or someone who has seen your leadership or community work in action.
5. Submission
Make sure all parts of the application (course application, funding section, essays, references, research proposal if needed) are completed and submitted by the stated deadlines.
Selection Process
Here’s how Gates Cambridge picks its scholars:
- Departmental Nomination
- After you submit your application, Cambridge departments review all candidates applying for both admission and funding.
- They nominate a small subset who are academically outstanding and who strongly meet the Gates criteria.
- Interview Round
- If your department nominates you, you’ll be invited to a 25–30 minute interview.
- Interviews may be in person or virtual, depending on your location.
- Panels are organized broadly by subject: Arts, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences.
- Interview format typically covers:
- Introduction – panel introduces themselves.
- Questions about Gates Cambridge: why you applied, what you know, what being a scholar would mean.
- Academic and career plans: your research, fit with Cambridge, future vision.
- Ethical or intellectual questions (no “right” answer – they want to see how you think).
- Your chance to ask questions or share final thoughts.
- Final Decision
- After interviews, the Trust selects its scholars and makes offers.
- Unfortunately, feedback is not provided to unsuccessful candidates.
